road to recovery: a guide to native landscape regeneration it the basin of mexico
project description
The Road to Recovery is a response to Mexico City’s intertwined ecological crises that have emerged from significant and irreversible alteration to the region’s landscape, impacting hydrology, topography, and ecology and thus degrading native conditions to a nearly nonexistent state. The proposal repurposes abandoned mining infrastructure to establish a new method of reforestation within the region that prioritizes soil remediation and native-habitat regeneration that filters water runoff, recharges the water aquifer, and establishes native nurseries. By reinterpreting the mining roads as watersheds, Mexico City’s problem of subsidence can be addressed by thinking simultaneously as foresters, soil scientists, and landscape architects.
